Alaa Abdel-Fattah is a British-Egyptian writer, human rights defender and software developer. He was one of the main militant voices during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He has been published in many media; Well known for founding a major Arabic blog aggregator; and has participated in several citizen journalism initiatives.
His book, You are not defeated yet, which compiles some of his most profoundly influential writings, has been widely acclaimed. Alaa was arrested under every Egyptian head of state during his lifetime. He is currently detained after an unfair trial on false charges related to his human rights advocacy.
On April 2, 2022, he went on an indefinite hunger strike as a last ditch effort for freedom. After more than 200 days of partial hunger strike, Alaa announced on 1stThere is In November 2022, he stopped his previous 100 calorie intake and went on a full hunger strike. Alaa has decided to start a water strike from November 6, 2022 to coincide with the opening of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. That means Alaa will be dead before the end of COP27 if he is not released.
